Selection Criteria

  • Submit an application to the Station Chief, as determined by the location of residence, for processing.
  • The Station Chief is then required to interview the applicant to determine their abilities and aptitude.
  • A basic assessment evaluation consisting of map reading and other general information will then be given. (A score of 70% or higher is required to continue on with the evaluation.)
  • The physical agility assessment evaluations are the next step. This consists of a simulated rescue, hose drag/couple, ladder operations, joist walk, and forcible entry. These evaluations are timed and scored on a pass/fail basis.

Selection Criteria Pre-Appointment Medical Evaluation

  • The Coffey County Firefighters Relief Association requires that all new members comply with the insurance company's policy that requires a physical exam before providing them with life insurance coverage.
  • In most cases, the Firefighter's Relief/insurance medical exam may be used for a certified medical evaluation. However, Coffey County Fire District Number 1 does reserve the right to request another medical exam be completed by the fire district's own physician. This ensures the evaluation meets the district's requirements.
  • If a medical issue is found that would interfere with the ability to perform active duties, the medical certificate shall be deferred. This deferral shall not exceed 365 days from the date of the exam, or until the medical issue has been resolved. The candidate may then submit a written request for another review by the physician.
  • If the candidate's medical requirements have not or can not be certified, they shall be deemed unable to perform essential duties and will not eligible for membership in the fire district.
